Editor's note: The president's column has a very personal tone this time around but we hope you can glean some value from it. September 29, 2005

Dear Dad,
You would have been 89 years old today. I was never much of a card writer when you were here but thought I'd drop you a line and let you know I think of you often. Like yesterday, when Charlie wasn't feeling well.   After he went to bed he came out to ask if there was something I could do. I looked into his eyes and told him that everything would be OK and that I'd always be there for him. He shot me a look so comforting I knew he would be sleeping within seconds of his head hitting the pillow. And he was.

You know I won't always be there for him—at least in person. But I've thought of you every day since you left us in June.

Not the frail, struggling-to-breathe dad on that bed that evening, but the one that found time to play catch with me after a 12-hour work day.

Big changes are brewing with the annual TOCA awards contest, starting with the name. Previously called the TOCA Writing, Design and Photo Awards Contest, the annual competition has been redubbed the TOCA Communications Contest.

The contest is now divided into two groups: Marketing and Publishing. Within those groups, the Publishing categories are focused more on commercial magazines and the Marketing categories are geared toward companies and agencies. Each group covers writing, design and photography/videography.

TOCA membership is currently at 220, which means we've reached our goal of 50 new members in two years. While that's good news, we can't stop our recruiting efforts. I hope as a member, you will once again spread the word about the many benefits of TOCA and help recruit those organizations and individuals who are missing out on all this association has to offer.

Areas of the green industry that we are targeting for our membership efforts this year are the Greenhouse/Nursery and Equipment sectors. We know there are potential TOCA members in those sectors who haven't joined. So if you know anyone, please personally invite them to join TOCA.

The 17 th TOCA Annual Meeting will be held May 2-4 at the Embassy Suites in Napa, California. This will mark the first time the meeting will be held mid-week.   Which could give all members an opportunity to stay the weekend and just soak in the ambience of the beautiful Napa Valley.

TOCA welcomes more than a dozen new members.

Check out upcoming events in the turf and ornamental industry.

As always at this time of year, TOCA is beginning its search for the next Environmental Communicator of the Year. Nominations for the 2006 winner are now being accepted. The award, which is sponsored by Advan, LLC, may be given to anyone in the Green Industry. It is presented each year at TOCA's annual meeting and will be awarded in May 2006 for the eighth time in Napa, CA.

The new member breakfast at the Green Industry Expo is set for Friday, Nov. 4, 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., at the Rosen Centre Hotel, Orlando, in Salon 5. The breakfast, sponsored by Dow AgroSciences, is for TOCA members and prospective members. Please RSVP to Den Gardner at tocaassociation@aol.com or call 952/758-6340. Thanks and see you in Orlando.
